The Seabed Minerals Authority (SBMA) has announced the appointment of Mrs. Beverly Stacey-Ataera as the new Seabed Minerals Commissioner, marking an important chapter in the nation’s ongoing stewardship of its vast ocean resources.

Married to a Cook Islander, Beverly initially joined the SBMA team in 2023 as the Director of Corporate Support. Balancing professional leadership with family commitments across Melbourne and Rarotonga, she demonstrated resilience, commitment, and a strong belief in the Authority’s mission.

In 2024, she and her family made Rarotonga their permanent home, affirming their dedication to the Cook Islands’ future.

In her new role, Beverly will lead SBMA in its mandate to manage the Cook Islands’ seabed minerals sector responsibly, transparently, and for the benefit of all Cook Islanders. She brings extensive professional expertise, proven leadership, and a deep respect for Cook Islands culture and values.

“It is both an honor and a privilege to step into this role. The Cook Islands are my home, and I am committed to ensuring that our work in seabed minerals is done with integrity, transparency, and always with our people and environment at the heart of it,” said Mrs. Stacey-Ataera.

The Minister responsible for Seabed Minerals and the SBMA staff warmly welcomed her appointment and expressed that they are looking forward to working under her guidance as the Authority continues to build capacity, uphold world-class governance standards, and strengthen partnerships locally, regionally, and globally.
